These bronze horses, forged in ancient Greece, found their place at St. Mark's Basilica in the 13th century, telling the story of the conquests and greatness of the lagoon city. THE STORY OF THE INSCRIPTION

The oldest mosaic in St. Mark's Basilica from the 13th century is a unique work that records the solemn oath of Doge Lorenzo Tiepolo in 1268 on the occasion of the transfer of the relic of St. Mark from the Doge's Palace to the Basilica. On the sides, the famous St. Mark's Horses bear witness to the completion of the basilica's reconstruction, accompanied by the Latin inscription "Collocat ung dignis plebs laudibus et colit hymnis ut venetos semper servet ab hoste suos" (This relic was placed for the praise and veneration of the people, so that it may forever protect the Venetian people from their enemies). The same sentence is expertly engraved into the handmade leather strap.
