The Squale 2001 collection represents a significant milestone in the history of diving watches. It was born in the 1960s, a time when new technologies transformed simple timepieces into reliable tools for professional divers b> transformed. This collection introduced significant innovations and cemented Squale's reputation as one of the leading brands in the world of diving watches. As we celebrate the brand's 65th anniversary, we look back at the events and personalities that helped make Squale an icon both in the past and today.

An outstanding example of this collection is the Squale 2001, which was created by the legendary explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau as a special gift to Michel Laval, the first officer of the Calypso, before the start of the Antarctic expedition b> was presented in 1972. This watch, already of symbolic value, was given even greater meaning by the personal engraving on the caseback. It bore Cousteau's initials and Laval's full name. During this time, it was a well-established tradition to present meaningful symbolic objects to important crew members.

After Laval's death, the watch returned to Cousteau, who entrusted it to his long-time collaborator and close friend André Laban. Laban kept the watch until his death in 2018, after which it became the property of a German collector of historical diving watches. After long negotiations, the watch finally found its way to its current owner, an Italian digital entrepreneur. This discovery inspired Squale to create a new edition of this iconic model that keeps the brand's tradition and history alive.

The watch itself impresses with its technical details. It has a diameter of 40 mm, a thickness of 13 mm and a lug-to-lug length of 43.6 mm. The polished case is made of high-quality 316L steel and features a screw-down case back and screw-down crown, which provides additional water resistance. Inside the watch, the Sellita SW 200-1 automatic movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 A/h (4 Hz). The movement offers a power reserve of 38 hours and has 26 jewels, which ensures a precise and long-lasting movement.

The bezel of the Squale 2001 is bi-directional and is released by a push mechanism, while the sapphire inlay ensures scratch resistance and durability. The black dial is complemented by printed and applied indices as well as Superluminova C3 for optimal readability in poor lighting conditions.
